You need to get worker’s compensation insurance. Without it, if someone gets hurt while working for you, unless it’s through their own GROSS negligence – they can sue you and will win every single time.
Also familiarize yourself with all of the applicable OSHA work standards and supervise them properly. You must take all steps possible to ensure their safety. Failure to do so exposes you to liability. Sometimes people get hurt, it happens. If you are acting in good faith and do everything you can to prevent it and everything you can to help them in the aftermath, you’ll be okay.

Make them a private contractor that must pay their own taxes and carry their own insurance. Make sure you have a signed contract that states such. Doing it this way you avoid a lot of governmental issues. A private contract is cover by USC, Art.1, Sect. 10 which pre-dates any OHSA, SS, Workmen’s Comp. and other employee/employer laws and cannot be ruled against without a change to the US Constitution. You will not be an employer.

Theres two ways you can do this: A)Hire subcontractors so they have to be self-insured or B)Have an “Umbrella” insurance coverage
